Maybe it’s because we’ve been in the news lately (p.s. still waiting on an apology from Attorney General Rokita). Maybe it’s because the LGBTQ+ community has been targeted for increased attacks from our federal and state governments and their leaders. Maybe it’s because their mamas didn’t teach them manners.
But twice in the span of a week, we received two “love letters” — one the old-fashioned way through the regular post; the other via our website contact form.
The first read, written in bold red marker on the back of an envelope read:
“YOU PEOPLE AREN’T PEOPLE YOUR [sic] JUST A BUNCH OF PERVERTS” (underlining, poor grammar, and lack of punctuation courtesy of the author.)
The second, received via the contact from our website, from someone who called himself “Gayman” read:
“You are a bunch of self-obsessed narcissists who do nothing of real value! You are consumers who produce nothing!”
Well, at least “Gayman” used punctuation.
If these messages weren’t driven by hatred — fueled by the dehumanizing rhetoric being espoused by far too many public officials (at every level of government) and conservative media outlets — they’d almost be funny. Like schoolyard taunts hurled by an insecure bully.
But the reality is, these notes are far from funny. These missives are evidence of a vitriolic intolerance and hatred that lurked beneath the surface of society and only occasionally reared up. Now, having been given permission by people like the President of the United States and the Governor, Lt. Governor, and Attorney General of Indiana who openly (and proudly) dehumanize their constituents, people like our authors feel empowered to openly spread their hate.
And as celebrate Pride Lafayette’s 22nd anniversary today, these little missives underscore why we cannot and we will not back down. We’re not going to be bullied into closing our doors. We’re not going to be silent. And we’re not going anywhere.
Since 2003, Pride Lafayette has been a beacon of hope shining brightly from the heart of Main Street in Downtown Lafayette. But that beacon is only possible because of you and your unwavering dedication to Pride Lafayette and the LGBTQ+ community of Greater Lafayette.
For 22 years, we have countered darkness with light, intolerance with acceptance, and hatred with love. Nothing will deter us from continuing that mission.
On this 22nd anniversary week, thank you for standing with us. Thank you for providing us with the financial resources we need to serve the community. Thank you for all you do to help make Greater Lafayette a welcoming and inclusive place for all.
In solidarity,
Ashley Smith
